Eye Spy Nature in December

Look out for visiting winter birds, especially on the pond… a pair of Common Pochard was spotted yesterday.

Common Pochard is a striking duck with its bright russet head and silver back, with a black breast and tail. Although resident across much of the UK, they rarely breed here. In winter they come in large numbers from eastern Europe and Russia to escape the bitterly cold winters.

They come to feed on plants and seeds, snails, small fish and insects. You can watch them diving for food on the pond.
